Overview of Pit Boss Smoker Maintenance

How to Maintain Your Pit Boss Smoker

Initial Cleanup: Remove Pellets and Burn Off Auger

Start clean by removing pellets from the hopper and burning off what’s left in the auger. Doing so keeps old and new pellets from mixing, which would affect your food’s flavor. This step also stops the auger system from getting blocked or breaking down.

Grate Cleaning: Scrub and Deep Clean

Scrub the grates in their original spot with a grill brush for grate cleaning. Scrubbing this way removes extra residue and grease before a deep clean. Next, please take out the grates and spray them with grill-safe cleaner or degreaser. Last, clean the grates with mild soap and water to remove any leftover cleaner.

Focus on Heat Deflector Plates

Besides the grates, focus on the heat deflector plates inside your smoker. Remove the heat deflector plates and use a shop vac to clean the burn pot. Cleaning the burn pot is critical for good airflow and stable temperature during smoking.

Interior and Exterior Maintenance

Cleaning the interior of your Pit Boss smoker is equally important as maintaining its exterior. Spray the smoker’s inside with a grill-safe degreaser or cleaner, like you did with the grates. Spraying with a degreaser removes grease and residue, which improves flavor and heating.

Routine Care: Dry Scrub and Vacuum

After each long cook, dry scrub the grates and vacuum out debris. Do the same every two or three short cooks. Dry scrubbing and vacuuming stop ash from building up on the heat diffuser. This keeps heat even and cuts down flare-up risks.

To maintain your Pit Boss smoker’s overall cleanliness and appearance:

  • Don’t forget to give the exterior some attention as well.
  • Spray it with a degreaser, allowing it to sit for a minute before wiping it down.
  • Rinse off any remaining residue.
  • Dry the surface with a towel to achieve a sparkling finish.

Lastly, change out liners when they are about two-thirds to three-quarters full to avoid spillage. The grease bucket can be easily washed with warm, soapy water before being reinserted into place. After completing a thorough cleaning, running a burn-off is highly recommended to remove any cleaning residue. Fill up the hopper, crank up the grill to high, and let it burn off for about 15 minutes.

You learned how to care for your Pit Boss smoker. Next, focus on how to keep the firebox clean.

Ash Removal from Grills & Racks

Properly cleaning and maintaining your Pit Boss smoker is essential for preventing problems and achieving flavorful food. One crucial maintenance aspect is regular ash removal from the grills and racks. Ash buildup can block airflow.

This blockage can make your smoker work poorly, leading to uneven cooking or even breakdowns. So, let’s dive into removing ash from your smoker to ensure it stays in top condition.

🌡️ Step 1: The Cool Down and Pellet Removal

Safety first: let the smoker cool down completely before you begin. This step prevents injuries. Once cool, remove any leftover pellets from the hopper. Crank up the heat for a few minutes to burn off any remaining pellets in the auger.

🧼 Step 2: Grate Cleaning 101

Now, it’s grate-cleaning time. Use a grill brush to scrub away any residue or food particles. After you’ve scrubbed them clean, remove the grates and spray them with a grill-friendly cleaner or degreaser.

💦 Step 3: Rinse and Repeat

Allow the cleaner to sit on the grates for about a minute. Then, rinse them thoroughly with water. Wash the grates with mild detergent to remove any leftover cleaner.

🎉 Why Clean Grates Matter

Imagine hosting a backyard BBQ. You don’t want old residue ruining your perfectly seasoned ribs. Clean grates ensure your food always tastes its best.

🌬️ Step 4: Focus on Other Areas

Next, pay attention to the heat deflector plates and burn pot. Remove them and use a shop vac to suck up any ash or loose debris. This ensures good airflow and top performance.

🧽 Step 5: The Final Clean

Spray the inside of the smoker with a grill-friendly cleaner. Let it sit for a minute before wiping it down and rinsing with water.

Regular ash removal keeps your smoker in top shape, extends its lifespan, and makes your food taste better.

🛠️ Next Up: Replacing Smoker Parts

Now that you’re an expert in ash removal, let’s explore another important aspect of smoker maintenance: replacing parts.

For more detailed troubleshooting tips on maintaining your Pit Boss smoker, you can read our comprehensive guide here.

Process of Replacing Smoker Parts

Taking good care of your Pit Boss smoker can avoid many problems. Still, some parts might need replacement due to wear or damage. Knowing how to replace worn or damaged parts helps keep your Pit Boss smoker working well. Here is what you should know for replacing parts like a faulty temperature probe or a worn-out gasket.

🔍 Step 1: Identify the Faulty Part

First, find out which part needs replacing by accurately checking the problem. You can find symptoms like uneven heat, leaks, or odd behavior by running tests. After seeing the faulty part, order a new one from a trusted seller or straight from Pit Boss.

🛠️ Step 2: Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions

When your new part arrives, carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions included in the packaging. Different parts need specific installation methods, so read the manufacturer’s instructions in the package with care. Having a basic set of tools ready helps with the part replacement.

🌡️ Step 3: Replacing a Bad Temperature Probe

You might have a bad temperature probe if your smoker doesn’t hit the right temperature. In this case, order a new probe for your Pit Boss model. Follow the guide that comes with the new probe. Take your time during the install. This way, you get the right temperature and good cooking.

⚠️ Step 4: Pay Attention to Extra Steps

Note any extra steps the maker tells you to take during the replacement. Extra steps may mean unplugging the smoker, removing some parts before getting to the part you need to change or aligning and securing the new part well. Doing as the maker says lowers the risk of harm or breaking something.

🧪 Step 5: Conduct a Test Run

After installing the new part firmly, test it immediately to ensure it works as it should. Fire up your Pit Boss smoker and monitor its performance closely, checking that any previous issues have been resolved. A good test run assures you that the new part works well.

Types of Interchangeable Components

Know its different interchangeable parts to keep your Pit Boss smoker in good shape. Such parts are key to how well your Pit Boss smoker works and saves energy. Keep an eye on key parts that you can swap out.

Fire Pot:

The wood pellets are burned in the fire pot to create heat and smoke. Over time, the fire pot can accumulate ash or debris, hindering airflow and affecting temperature control. Regularly cleaning the fire pot ensures optimal performance and prevents potential issues during your smoking sessions.

Heat Diffuser/Deflector Plates:

Heat diffuser plates are placed above the fire pot to distribute heat evenly throughout the cooking chamber. These plates also help prevent flare-ups and allow for indirect cooking. Over time, they may accumulate grease or residue, affecting their performance. Cleaning or replacing these plates regularly ensures proper heat distribution and consistent results.

Grill Grates:

The grill grates are where you place your food for smoking or grilling. These grates can accumulate grease, food particles, and residue over time, leading to uneven cooking or unwanted flavors. It’s essential to clean the grates thoroughly before and after each use to maintain hygiene and improve the taste of your food.

Temp Probe:

The temperature probe is a vital part that lets you accurately track your smoker’s inner heat level. The temperature probe can wear out or lose accuracy over time because of high heat or damage. Regular temp probe checks or replacements give precise readings and improve cooking control.

Knowing how parts like the temperature probe work helps you grasp their role in your smoker’s performance. Keeping parts like the temperature probe clean and in good shape keeps your Pit Boss smoker working well for a long time.

Proper Usage of Maintenance Fluids

Proper usage of maintenance fluids is crucial to enhance the longevity and performance of your Pit Boss smoker. Here are some essential points to consider:

Degreasers and Cleaners:

Use purpose-made degreasers and cleaners to clean your smoker’s various components effectively. These products break down grease, grime, and residue. They also avoid damaging the material and keep your food’s flavor intact.

First, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper application. Then, rinse the surfaces well after cleaning.

Seasoning Oil:

Seasoning oil protects and maintains the surface of your smoker’s interior, mainly on cast iron grates or other metal surfaces. Applying a thin coat of seasoning oil after cleaning helps prevent rust and preserves the non-stick properties of the grates. Additionally, it adds a touch of flavor to your food during the smoking process.

Lubricants:

Moving parts like hinges and wheels on your smoker need the right oil for smooth action. The right oil cuts down on friction, stops rust, and makes your smoker last longer. Use oils safe for food so you don’t spoil your meal.

Using the right fluids keeps your Pit Boss smoker clean, working well, and long-lasting. Add these steps to your care plan for better smoking and tasty meat every time.

Managing Airflow & Surfaces in Your Smoker

Good airflow and clean surfaces in your Pit Boss smoker are key for great cooking. Good airflow and clean surfaces make sure heat spreads evenly, pellets burn well, and cooking is even.

A key part of airflow control in your smoker is handling the intake and exhaust vents. The vents control how much oxygen gets into the smoker and let out smoke and extra heat.

🌬️ Step 1: Vent Control for Airflow

By adjusting the vents, you can fine-tune the temperature inside the smoker. For example, opening the vents wider increases airflow and raises the temperature, while closing them partially restricts airflow and lowers the temperature.

🧼 Step 2: Importance of Clean Surfaces

Cleaning and maintaining the smoker’s surfaces is often also key to top performance. Over time, grates and heat plates can get dirty with grease and ash, which hurts the taste and how well the smoker works.

🧽 Step 3: Scrubbing the Grates

Start using a grill brush to scrub the grates while still in place. This removes any excess debris or carbon buildup from previous cooks. Once done, remove the grates and give them a thorough cleaning. Spray them with a cleaner or degreaser designed explicitly for grills and let them sit for about a minute to loosen any stubborn residue.

💦 Step 4: Rinsing and Final Cleaning

Next, wipe down and rinse the grates with water to remove any remaining cleaning solution. If needed, use mild detergent and water to wash away any leftover residue from the cleaner. This step ensures your grates are clean and ready for your next smoking session.

🍖 Practical Application: Managing Airflow and Surfaces

Imagine you’re preparing to smoke a rack of ribs for a family barbecue. You’ve carefully selected the meat, marinated it overnight, and now it’s time to fire up your Pit Boss smoker. As you preheat the smoker and prepare the wood pellets, you remember the importance of managing airflow and surfaces.

Adjust the vents accordingly, allowing the right amount of oxygen to ignite the pellets and create an ideal smoke environment. Meanwhile, you clean the grates and surfaces, removing remnants from previous cooks and ensuring a fresh and hygienic cooking surface for your delicious ribs.

🌬️ Step 5: Regular Upkeep

Clean the grates, heat deflector plates, and other interior surfaces regularly. Use a shop vac to remove debris or ash from the burn pot. This helps air flow well and stops airflow problems. Spray the smoker’s inside with a degreaser or cleaner. Use the exact steps you follow when you clean the grates.

You know how to manage airflow and surfaces in your Pit Boss smoker. Also, learn how to take care of the grill’s outside.

Buying the Pit Boss Pellet Grill: What You Need to Know

[amazon box=”B01GFX0104″]

Now that you have read our two cents on  the Pit Boss 700Fb Pellet Grill, it’s time to know the things you should be focusing on while buying a Pit Boss Pellet Grill.

Size:

It is important to know how much space you have for your pellet grill. If you have a smaller backyard, you need something compact and easy to move around. Lucky for you, Pit Boss 700FB Pellet Grill comes with rolling wheels for easy maneuverability.

The size of the cooking surface is another important thing you need to focus on. If you buy something with 300-400 square inches of grilling area, it will be suitable for a family of three to four.

Pit Boss 700FB grill comes with a solid 700 square inches of grilling surface. This means you can easily prepare for 8-10 people! This is perfect for BBQ parties with family and friends.

Temperature Control:

This is a really important feature of any type of grill and smoker. You need to look for something with easy to function controls. Most grills come with knobs that let you set the temperature.

Pit Boss 700FB takes a modern take on this by adding an LED control panel for ease of use. The control panel helps you get precise temperature every single time.

This is really helpful especially if you are into trying different grilling methods. This adds versatility to your cooking.

Performance:

The Pit Boss 700FB can grill for 40 hours without intervals! This is excellent because you can use it as a smoker and slow griller.

The temperature of this model goes as high as 600° Fahrenheit. This means you can use it for a variety of cooking methods such as grilling, searing, smoking, barbecuing, char-grilling, backing, roasting and even braising.

The lowest setting is perfect for slow cooking pork. You get juicy and tender meat without losing any moisture.

There is a special “Smoke Setting” that lets you control how much smoke flavors you want in your food. How convenient!

Design:

While buying a pellet grill, it is important to look for something with user friendly design. You can buy something too complicated and never use it or you can go for a simpler version that motivates you to grill every week!

The design of this grill is very practical. It has a simple setup process that should not take longer than an hour or two. The instructions are clear and come with all the steps you need to follow.

The whole layout is structured to give maximum efficiency and ease while working. The stainless steel  exterior adds a sleek and modern touch to it while the porcelain coating makes cleanup really easy.

Durability:

It is important to focus on durability while buying a pellet grill. The Pit Boss 700FB grill, for example, is made out of heavy-gauge stainless steel.

Most people prefer stainless steel bodies over aluminum options. Stainless steel is heat resistant thus perfect for high temperature cooking.

Even though stainless steel is not the most rust-resistant material, it has a lot of added benefits. Thus having a grill cover makes it moisture-proof as well. This is why Pit Boss 700FB is such a good choice.

Warranty:

As grills are more of an investment, you need to get your money’s worth. One of the ways to ensure that is to purchase something with a great warranty.

The Pit Boss 700FB comes with a 1-year warranty on all parts. This can be a downside as this grill is quite expensive.

They have a 90-day return policy in case you are not satisfied with your purchase. This makes it very convenient to make a decision without worrying too much about regrets.

Maintaining and Cleaning Tips for Pit Boss Grill

While most pellet grills are hard to clean and maintain, taking care of your Pit Boss 700FB grill is fairly easy. All you need to do is follow these steps:

Clean the Lid:

It is very important to clean the lid of the grill. The lid gathers all the oil and moisture. Use a putty knife to scrape off the build up from the lid.

If they are too stubborn, you can use a nylon scrubber or a brush.

If you are looking for some good grill brush options, check out here

Remove the Parts:

Yes, to properly clean your grill, you need to remove all the components of it. This includes the grates, drip tray, and the deflector plate.

Again, use your putty knife to remove the grimes from it. Don’t be too aggressive as this can damage the porcelain coation on the grill grates.

Clean the Chimney:

We tend to overlook this part of the grill too often. We think as the chimney does not have any oil, it doesn’t need a cleanup. This is not true.

Over time the chimney gathers a lot of coal and dust. Cleaning it every few months will ensure better temperature control.

Vacuum It Out:

After you are done scraping and scrubbing everything, bring out your compact vacuum and remove all the excess . you can use both wet and dry vacuums for this.

Use Soapy Water:

For the grill grates and other cleaning areas, use a soft towel and soap water to gently remove the buildup grease and grimes. Then let the grates completely dry before setting it up again.

You can also use grill cleaners for those stubborn grimes. Check out our list for the best options.

Clean the Exterior

As Pit Boss 700FB has a stainless steel exterior, cleaning it is quite simple. All you need is soap water and a napkin.

Spray the cleaning solution on the surface and gently rub. Wipe aways any excess oil and dirt. After you’re done cleaning, it should look brand new!

How to Use Your Pit Boss 700FB

Cooking on your Pit Boss 700FB grill is really simple and fun to do. Due to its wide range of temperature control, you get the freedom to try many different recipes and methods.

Gather Enough Fuel:

Pellet grills need wood pellets for fuel. It is always better to have too much fuel than to have too little.

Pit Boss 700FB needs a specific wood pellet that you can only find at Pit Bros. These woods are free of any kind of chemicals so you have nothing to worry about.

A good measurement is to have around 2 lbs of pellets for every hour of smoking at low temperature. For high heat grilling, you need around 4 lbs per hour.

Set to “Smoke”:

After you have gathered the fuel, open the lid and set the “smoke” option on the control panel. Then all you have to do is put a few pellets and let the grill rise to 400°F.

If you don’t set the “smoke “ button, the grill will continue to eat fuel to reach that temperature. This way you save your fuel for later.

Let the Temperature Rise:

This is the part where you leave your grill alone. Let it rise to the temperature you want. You will know your grill is ready when you see thick smokes coming out of this.

This means the pellets are burning and the grates are getting hot. The smoke usually stops after a few minutes.

Prepare Your Food:

When the grill is getting ready, you can prepare your food and get them to your work area. It only takes three minutes for this grill to be ready.

So you can prepare your food and gather around with your family for the next step of fun.

Always have a few reliable pairs of tongs at hand. Find out the best grill tongs here.

Start Grilling:

Here comes the part we’ve all been waiting for! When you hear the pellets bruning, this is the time to start grilling.

You can control the temperature by pressing on the panel and then put your favourite piece of meat on the surface.

I love to start with a good old fashioned hamburger. Flip it around for a few minutes and voila! Your classic American delight is ready!

We often get burns while grilling for a longer period of time. To be extra safe while cooking, it’s better to buy a good pair of heat-resistant gloves. Check here to know more.

Of course, like any other product, this one comes with its own sets of advantages. Let’s take a look:

Effectiveness:

With the tightly closed lid, temperature control, and porcelain-coated grill plates, the Austin XL smoker effectively cooks your food the way you want it.

Flavor:

One of the main advantages of a porcelain-coated grill is that it spreads the heat evenly, and so none of the food is over or undercooked. As a result, you get delicious, juicy protein to go with all kinds of rice, be it brown rice or sushi

Ease of Use:

Once you have figured out how to use this, it will be a breeze. There are no complicated buttons and only the temperature control knob to make your grilling session hasslefree!

Value for Money:

The price tag on this might be high but hey! Austin XL Pit Boss is one of the best pellet grills out there with its superior performance.

The Highs:

  • Cooks all kinds of food to perfection.
  • Direct flaming is great for charred flavor on food.
  • The temperature range allows versatility in cooking.
  • Accommodates a lot of items in one go.
  • Has easy one-touch temperature adjustments.
  • Does not rust easily.
  • Built to last.

The Lows:

  • Gets extremely hot: Since the Pit Boss XL pellet grill reaches up to a temperature of 500 degrees Fahrenheit, it is expected that it will get really hot after a while. And I am not just talking about the interior, the body and panel can get pretty hot as well!

Ergo, your cooking can be delayed for a while if you do not want to go near it.

However, I have found the Grill Heat Aid Heat Resistant Gloves to do an excellent job when dealing with hot items. I can easily touch my Pit Boss XL with these and only feel a little warmth in my hands!

  • Can cause flare-ups: The grates on the Pit Boss XL Pellet Grill are a teensy bit wider than we are used to. Hence, some of the grease and other liquids might seep through. This becomes a problem only when you add alcohol carelessly, causing flare-ups.

To avoid this, you could trim out the fat from the meat beforehand and also consider cleaning the grill every once in a while.

Pit Boss Pellet Grill Review: My Experience with It

Honestly, from my experience, the Pit Boss Austin XL is a beast! It can cook up anything and it does so perfectly. Not only did it leave me in awe, but my friends and family were also blown away as well!

Wondering what all this hype is about? Here are a few pointers:

Nothing Easier Than This!:

I hate complicated buttons and so one of my main attractions towards the Pit Boss Grill was the ease of use. Coming with an LED panel on the front, you can easily control all the setups.

From 150 to 500 degrees, you can effortlessly increase or decrease the temperature according to your needs. The best part is that no matter how high the heat is, the food will not dry out and will remain as juicy as ever!

Superior Performance:

Most Pit Boss pellet grill reviews will tell you one thing and that is: it is worth the money! Running on a fan-forced convection cooking, it efficiently grills everything you place on it. It gives out a total of 20700 BTUs making it one of the strongest grills out there.

Besides, it charges up with 100% natural hardwood pellets. You can be sure that the food will taste good!

Lots of Cooking Space:

Featuring 1000 square inches of cooking space, I knew instantly that this would be perfect for my backyard parties! I can place around 48 burgers on it and it nicely welcomes all of them with enough space in between each.

Out of the 1000 square inches, 930 square inches are for the direct flaming feature it offers. When preparing my duck or turkeys, this space lets me slow cook them to perfection!

Moreover, the hopper can fit in 31 lbs of Pit Boss smoker pellets which is quite a lot if you ask me. This ample space also means that the pellets do not finish easily and you can grill for a long time!

Eight Functions in One:

Unlike many grills, the Pit Boss XL Pellet Grill is good for more than one function. Apart from grilling, I have also roasted and smoked my food! In fact, with its wide temperature range, you can easily bake items on this as well.

Along with that, it has an amazing flame broiler that gives you the benefit of both indirect and direct cooking. If you want an excellent sear on the meat, this is the feature you should use.

How do you know if the temperature is correct?

Well, the thermometer on top lets you refer to the accurate heat inside the grill. With this, you can rest easy knowing what the inside of it is like!

Stronger Than Most:

Lastly, but definitely not the least, one of the main aspects that anyone looks for in a grill is durability. After all, spending so much money should be worth it, right?

Crafted with premium-grade steel and copper it will stay with you for a long time! If you compare it to other grills, you will notice that the steel used here is heavier than most, making it more durable than the rest.

Remember when I talked about its looks being the secret to its durability?

The color of the chimney, hood, and lid might be there for attraction but that is not all. This color comes out due to a high-temperature copper finish that makes them resistant to rust and corrosion! How smart is that?!

You might be thinking that with all this heaviness, it should be hard to move around? It would have if it weighed a lot!

But, this fantastic pellet grill only weighs 179 pounds and has four caster wheels for easy movement. Durable and maneuverable!

Buying the Pit Boss Austin XL Pellet Grill: What You Need to Know

I have almost covered everything you need to know before buying your Pit Boss Austin XL for sale. But, a few more tips could not hurt anyone! Let’s learn a bit more, shall we?

Assemblage:

Assembling any grill for a first-timer is pretty complicated. However, if you are a pro, it should take about half an hour max!

The first time I got my Pit Boss Austin XL Grill, I had help and the two of us got it done in about 40 to 50 minutes. Pretty impressive for us!

  1. Connect the bottom shelf to the four legs that came in the box.
  2. Attach the long and side support plates to the legs.
  3. Fasten the wheels to the legs.
  4. Screw the main grill unit over the assembled legs.
  5. Attach the lid and side handles to the unit.
  6. Place the thermometer into the hole on the lid.
  7. Take the grease bucket out of the hopper and place it to the side of the unit.
  8. Insert the flame broiler and the grates inside the lid.
  9. Screw the chimney in place.
  10. Tada! You are done!

I do not always like following the user manual so if you are like me here is a video to follow.

If not, the user manual that comes with the Pit Boss XL Pellet Grill does a pretty good job as well!

Portability:

I will not lie that when I first put this grill together, I thought it would be a heck of a job getting it moving. However, as soon I started moving it, the four caster wheels made it 10x easier to maneuver!

That being said, I tested it on grass well but sadly, it did not move so well there. But, it is smooth on concrete patios and decks and what more could you ask for!

Priming:

This is a rather unknown fact but whenever you get a pellet grill, it is best that you prime it at first.

What happens if you do not?

It is highly likely that the igniter will time out and the pellets will not be able to reach it while it is hot.

Do not know how to prime? I got you covered!

  1. Fill the pellet holder with pellets.
  2. Get the grill geared in XL mode.
  3. Push down the prime button.

That is all you have to do! After this, the auger will feed the pellets from the reservoir to the firepot. Once you hear the sound of pellets falling into the firepot, you will know that the grill is primed!

Remember that this is not an everyday process. Priming only needs to be done when the grill is being used for the first time so do not freak out yet!

How to Use the Pit Boss Austin XL Pellet Grill

Confused about how to operate a pellet grill? Follow these steps for an easy start-up:

  1. Fill the reservoir with the pellets.
  2. Set the unit to your desired temperature.
  3. Press the power button to get it geared up.
  4. After a while, there will be smoke coming out of the smokestack.
  5. After 10 minutes or so, your Pit Boss Grill will be ready to use!

Note: The first time you start up this beast, it is normal to notice a lot of smoke coming out so do not freak out!

Maintaining & Cleaning Tips for a Pit Boss Austin XL Pellet Grill

Even though I vouched for the durability of the Pit Boss XL Grill, the key to keeping it that way is maintaining it. Here are a few cleaning tips to keep your grill as good as new:

  1. Burn off the extra food bits that remain after grilling.
  2. Use a grill brush to scrape out the stubborn debris from the grates.
  3. Unfasten the grate and scrub the other side as well.
  4. Use a grill cleaner to remove grease from the grates.
  5. Rinse and wipe with water.
  6. After the grates are completely out, clean the dirt from the burner cover.
  7. Empty the grease bucket below.
  8. Remove the ashes from inside the burn pot as well as from the bottom of the barrel.

Friendly tip: What I like to do to make my life easier is to place an aluminum foil paper over the grease pan. In this way, I do not have to clean it, rather I can simply throw the liner out.
