What is smoked salmon

Smoked salmon is an expensive food. And it’s not everyday that you get to eat or buy one. That’s why smoked salmon is often considered a type of delicacy.

What is smoked salmon  and how is it made? Smoked salmon is a cut of salmon fillet that has been cured and smoked. The curing process helps remove the bacteria and other microorganisms that are harmful when eaten. This process also stops the spoilage of the fish. And it can add a nice  smokey flavor to it.

Water from the fish is removed and replaced by salt and sugar. The fish is  then cured overnight. This will soak in all the flavors.

Smoked salon has a very delicate flavor. And it feels buttery soft and smooth on the mouth too.

Freezing smoked salmon

If you have a ton of smoked salmon, you can preserve the flavor, color, and texture by freezing it. The question is, how long does smoked salmon last in the freezer?

Smoked salmon can keep in the freezer for 6-9 months! That’s quite long right? Yes it is,  you can even keep it indefinitely if you have kept it frozen at 0 degrees. But most of the flavor will be gone by then. Besides, 6-9 months may be  too long. You might have used everything in 3 months time!

You can consume smoked salmon that’s past their  best before date provided that you freeze them properly.  Take note of the word proper. You can’t just toss smoked salmon in the freezer and expect it to keep.

Freezing smoked fish

There are two factors to consider in freezing smoked salmon or other fish. One, you have to consider the proper portions. And two, you have to use the proper packaging.

01. Proper portions:

David the smoked salmon into portions that you need. Cutting them into smaller sizes and smaller portions can be convenient. It’s not ideal to freeze a big portion of the fish and thaw it. Then put the remaining portions back in the freezer. Refreezing smoked fish isn’t advisable. This can cause the fish to deteriorate. And the fish could have harbored microorganism in it already.

02. Proper packaging:

You can use either plastic wraps or freezer papers for the packaging.  These are airtight packing that will prevent oxygen from getting in contact with the salmon.  You also need vacuum sealers to seal the edges.

How to Properly Package Smoked Salmon for Freezing

Proper packaging will prevent oxidation and dehydration  of the fish. Once air gets into contact with the salmon, it can lose its moisture and can become dry. That will be the least thing that you’d want from a smoked salmon.

That’s why you need to package it properly before tossing it in the freezer. And here’s how.

  1. Use a combination of two layers of the packaging. Freeze papers and plastic wraps are the best options. A double layer will ensure that no air will get inside.  It will help prevent  freezer burns.
  2. Wrap the small portion size of salmon in two layers of plastic wrap. Then seal the edges
  3. Then make another 2 layered wrap, this time use the freeze papers. Then seal the edges as well.
  4. Alternatively, you can use a special type of plastic wrap and a vacuum sealer. You can skip step #3 if you’re using this material and sealer.
  5. Label it accordingly. And remember to follow the rule, first in first out.

How to Thaw Frozen Smoked Salmon

As with the packaging, there is also a proper way of thawing frozen fish. Otherwise, it can lose all of its flavor.

  1. Transfer the frozen smoked salmon from the freezer to the refrigerator.
  2. League it in the ref at a temperature below 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Or until it is completely defrosted.
  3. Whatever happens, never thaw frozen salmon at room temperature. Otherwise these can happen
  • Bacterial contamination
  • Loss of flavor and texture

Eating spoiled smoked salmon is a recipe for disaster. It can cause stomach upset, nausea and vomiting. And in severe cases, it can lead to septicemia and shock. And if your smoked salmon hasn’t been pagle properly, this is likely to happen. Cold smoked salmon, especially, is prone to develop botulism and listeria when not frozen and thawed properly.
